I haven't had much time for writing this week, but the one thing keeping me sane during these tizzying times has been running. After Monday's 5K around the 'hood, I went to the gym to cross train on the bike on Tuesday, back to the gym for intervals on the treadmill on Wednesday (not my speediest, or best workout, but I still got it done), took Thursday off, and ran 6K by accident yesterday. Well, I ran 5K on purpose, but I was trying to change up my route, my Garmin battery died, and so I had no idea of my distance or time until I got home and used Google maps. 6K. This morning Hal was telling me to run 5 miles and call it a long run, but I rounded that up to make it a nice 10K. That will be the shortest long run until the marathon.
Before my run today, I didn't eat. I wanted to get out before it got too hot, and I'd slept in a little later than planned, so I just downed one gel for a little extra kick and headed out. Running 5K on an empty stomach is one thing, but I really felt it towards the end of my run today. In colder months, when I'm less worried about getting out before the heat, I get up and have a little bit of yogourt and granola, wait an hour or so to be sure my stomach is settled and then head out. With this routine I rarely get stomach cramps or feel sick while running, but if I don't wait, I feel vomitous pretty quickly. I love my yogourt and granola breakfasts, but I'm wondering if something a little lighter would get me out the door more quickly, but without an empty stomach. What do you eat before you run? Especially before your long runs?
Good job on getting your runs in, even though work is tough right now. Great!
ReplyDeleteIn regards to food before the run, I am experimenting right now as well. Today I tried a banana and waiting 30 minutes and was fine. I also heard a bagel is good before and during the run. Maybe you should try that next time :)
I usually dont eat before going on a run, but its true that if i keep extanding my runs, im gonna need those advices too !
ReplyDeleteHi Amy,
ReplyDeleteNice work getting out there and busting out your runs! Well, as you know, I am the queen of stomach issues:( I am like you and do not typically eat a huge breakfast. I eat a half of a banana and some yogurt. I know that there are tons of people who eat a half of a bagel with P. butter. Some like oatmeal but for me...not good with my GI issues:) Good luck to you!
During the week, when I run in the mornings, I get up at 5am and don't eat just head right now. For longer runs on the weekend, I usually have Peanut butter and toast. I don't usually eat alot before running, otherwise i can get upset stomachs.
ReplyDeleteI always eat something substantial before a long run, often a bagel with PB. This means getting up before 5am most of the time to eat and digest before heafig out to beat the heat, but fueling well is important so it's a sacrifice that has to be made. Truthfully, I got used to it and now it just feels like a habit to be up at that time on Sundays.
ReplyDeleteNice job on your runs!
I'm a pb&j girl all the way...
ReplyDeleteGlad your job is safe for now.
I have found that spreading about 1 T of almond butter onto a flat thin...keeps me full for up to a 6 mile run. As I increase my milage..I guess I need to play around with other sources of gels for fuel..any suggestions? At what mileage points do you refuel?
